Shanil Fernando is currently the Managing Director of Sysco LABS. He previously co-founded CAKE LABS, a Silicon Valley company that developed and launched CAKE, a cloud-based Point-of-Sales (POS) system, to the U.S. market.
In 2017, CAKE LABS was fully acquired by U.S.-based Sysco Corporation and subsequently rebranded as Sysco LABS. Sysco is the global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food and non-food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers around the world. With more than 69,000 associates, the company operates more than 320 distribution facilities worldwide and serves more than 650,000 customer locations.
Prior to co-founding CAKE LABS, Shanil Fernando was a founding member of Virtusa, and served as Chief Technology Officer from 1996 -2009.
Sysco LABS operates out of three U.S. offices: San Mateo, California, Austin, TX and Houston, TX, as well as Sri Lanka, where it employs 500+ associates. In 2019, Sysco LABS was awarded the Merit Certificate in the ICT Sector at the annual Presidential Export Awards.
In 2016, Fernando was named ICT Leader of the Year by the Computer Society of Sri Lanka for his role in shaping the Sri Lankan IT industry. Prior to co-founding CAKE LABS, Shanil Fernando was a founding member of Virtusa, and served as Chief Technology Officer from 1996 -2009. He is credited as being responsible for a large part of Virtusa’s growth in the early years and saw them become listed on the Nasdaq.
