Chasing Global Trends for Rural Impact

The demand for dehydrated natural foods is on the rise as consumers become increasingly health-conscious and environmentally aware, seeking convenient options that fit their lifestyles. Lakmini Weerakkody founded her business to meet this growing trend, but her ambitions go further—she’s dedicated to empowering women in rural Sri Lanka by creating sustainable livelihoods.

At just 30, Lakmini has transformed a simple idea into a thriving enterprise, Lak Nature International, where she blends her expertise in food technology with a deep commitment to sustainability and women’s empowerment. Based in Kalutara, Western Province, her journey began in 2019 with a mission to reduce food waste and offer healthier food choices for modern consumers.

Lak Nature International is more than just another food business; it’s a purpose-driven company with over 50 natural, dehydrated products, 95% of which are exported to markets like Korea, Japan, and Europe. With monthly revenues nearing a million rupees, Lakmini is focused on scaling her business, expanding the product range, and empowering more women in rural communities. Notably, her production plant is operated entirely by an all-female team.

Innovation is at the heart of Lak Nature International. Despite facing challenges, Lakmini’s inventive strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic were a turning point, leading to the creation of ready-to-eat, healthy products like herbal porridge and gotukola-based items. As the company continues to grow, plans are underway to expand its product line and reach even more markets, all while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and social impact.
