Meera Nadarasa, a dedicated advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Batticaloa, is working tirelessly to create safe spaces and raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province. Through her work with Anichcham Media, Meera has made a significant impact, providing essential support and resources to those in need.
One of the primary services offered by Anichcham Media is emergency housing for LGBTQ+ individuals facing eviction due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This initiative has been crucial, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many were left vulnerable. In addition to housing, Anichcham Media provides legal aid and support for victims of human rights violations, ensuring that those who have faced discrimination and violence have a path to justice.
Monthly support group meetings organized by Anichcham offer a safe environment for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect, share experiences, and access resources. These meetings are part of a broader effort to educate the public about LGBTQ+ rights and challenge the discriminatory laws that perpetuate systemic inequality.
Meera’s work is deeply personal, fueled by the discrimination and prejudice she has faced in her own life. She is committed to creating a society where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can live with dignity and respect. “More than motivation, I was rather goaded into this by the daily affronts to human dignity that people like me face,” she says. Despite the lack of comprehensive data on the LGBTQ+ community in Sri Lanka, Meera emphasizes the urgent need for legal protection and societal change. Her vision is to empower the LGBTQ+ community through economic self-sufficiency and advocate for their legal recognition.
