Courageously living by her convictions, Sayojitha Vijayakumar, at just 23 years old, is a trailblazer in eco-social and peace practices. Hailing from Kandy, she is the founder of Yatra, an initiative deeply rooted in promoting diversity, nonviolence, and eco-social transformation. Yatra, which began in collaboration with the Center for Peacebuilding and Reconciliation (CPBR), is a community-driven platform that brings together like-minded individuals committed to fostering holistic well-being and conflict transformation.
Sayojitha’s journey took a remarkable turn when she embarked on a solo trek along the Sri Lankan Pekoe Trail, covering 300km in just 12 days. The Pekoe Trail is a 22-stage long-distance hiking route winding through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, which starts in Kandy and covers scenic trails in Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Hatton, and Ella.
This courageous feat was not just an adventure but a powerful statement. Coming from a conservative background where women often face societal constraints, Sayojitha broke the mould by becoming the first solo female traveller on this trail. Her journey was more than a physical challenge; it was a quest for self-discovery and a message of empowerment to other young women. Through this trek, she aimed to inspire others to embrace their inner adventurer and reconnect with nature.
Yatra embodies these values by offering workshops that explore innovative ways to bridge social, environmental, and cultural divides. Sayojitha’s work encourages individuals to reconnect with their inner selves, nature, and each other, fostering a peaceful and inclusive environment. Her vision for Yatra extends beyond workshops; she aspires to reform the education system by integrating adventure and conscious living into learning, ultimately creating a space where individuals can thrive in harmony with nature and society.
