Located in the town of Palaly in the Nothern province, the Jaffna International Airport was built by the occupying British during World War 2. It was the country’s second international airport before being taken over by the Air Force during the war. After several false starts, the airport and its runway were redeveloped for civilian use at a cost of over Rs2 billion. Around 15% of redevelopment cost was provided by the government of India.
