City Of Dreams Sri Lanka: Building South Asia’s Entertainment Hub

In Its First Year, City Of Dreams Has Hosted Bollywood Stars, Cultural Experiences, And A West End Musical.

City Of Dreams Sri Lanka: Building South Asia’s Entertainment Hub

Colombo has spent the past year becoming a destination for international entertainment, regional talent, cultural experiences and world-class events. At the centre of this transformation is City of Dreams Sri Lanka, South Asia’s first integrated resort, which has used its opening year to establish more than just a collection of individual events. It has created a year-round entertainment calendar that brings together Bollywood, international music, theatre, fashion, comedy, nightlife and cultural celebrations, giving Colombo a new rhythm and a growing presence on the regional entertainment map.

A Grand Opening That Set the Tone

When City of Dreams Sri Lanka opened its doors on the 1st of August 2025, Bollywood icon Hrithik Roshan attended as the special guest of honour, creating an opening moment that placed Colombo in the regional spotlight. The occasion was more than the launch of a new luxury destination. It introduced the ambition behind the resort and its “Let’s Go, Let Go” campaign, signalling the arrival of a destination designed to bring internationally recognised entertainment and experiences to Sri Lanka. What followed over the next year demonstrated that the opening was not a standalone moment. It was the beginning of an ongoing programme designed to attract audiences from Sri Lanka and across the region.

Giving Bollywood a Reason to Return

Bollywood has played an important role in that journey. Arjun Rampal and Miss Universe India 2023 Shweta Sharda brought star power to Signature Glam in September 2025, followed weeks later by Suniel Shetty and Nia Sharma for Signature Diwali Glitz. These appearances were not simply celebrity visits. They were connected to key cultural and festive moments, creating a consistent rhythm of regional entertainment experiences in Colombo.

With India remaining Sri Lanka’s largest visitor market, this recurring presence has helped strengthen the connection between the two markets and gradually position Colombo as a destination that can sit alongside established regional entertainment centres such as Mumbai and Dubai. The celebrity experience has also extended beyond the event itself. Visiting stars have stayed at NÜWA, the resort’s ultra-luxury hotel, allowing each appearance to showcase both the entertainment and hospitality dimensions of the destination.

From Hosting Entertainment to Creating It

If the celebrity calendar demonstrated the resort’s ability to attract regional attention, La Bamba! The Song of Veracruz demonstrated something more ambitious: Colombo’s ability to host and produce international-standard entertainment. Presented in partnership with the John Keells Foundation, the West End-licensed musical was directed by acclaimed West End producer Paul Morrissey and brought together international performers with Sri Lankan talent selected through open auditions.

Across seven performances at The Forum from 24 to 28 April 2026, the production demonstrated that Colombo could provide a platform for entertainment of international calibre while creating opportunities for local performers to share the stage with global talent. For a city more accustomed to importing entertainment than producing it, the significance of a production of this scale taking place locally goes beyond the performances themselves. It represents a growing creative and production capability within Colombo.

Fashion Finds a Regional Stage

The resort’s role in Colombo’s creative landscape has also extended into fashion. City of Dreams Sri Lanka served as the official venue and hospitality partner for Colombo Fashion Week’s Summer Edition, its 23rd edition, presented by Mastercard from 1 to 4 April 2026. The four-day event brought together more than 30 designers from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, China and Russia, alongside 11 emerging designers. The edition also marked a first-time partnership with the BRICS International Fashion Federation through the BRICS Fashion Showcase South Asian Edition. For four days, City of Dreams Sri Lanka became a meeting point for designers, models, creative professionals and audiences from across the region, reinforcing the resort’s growing role as a platform for fashion and creative expression.

Connecting Colombo to the International Music Circuit

Music and nightlife have become another defining part of the resort’s entertainment identity. Viral Festival, held at The Forum on the 6th of June 2026, brought together international DJs including Joe Lobel, SiangYoo, DCR Milda and Papazxk. The event also demonstrated measurable audience demand, with Viral Stage tickets selling out, VIP passes reaching 90% sold at early-bird pricing, and general admission reaching 70% sold ahead of the event.

Three weeks later, Latin Heat brought internationally acclaimed DJ Katch to Dreams & Beats on Level 9. With more than 700 million Spotify streams, platinum records, and performances across more than 40 countries, his appearance further connected Colombo with the international electronic music circuit.

Alongside international bookings, City of Dreams Sri Lanka has developed experiences with a distinctly local and regional identity. Serendisco, Sri Lanka’s flagship annual house music festival, brings together international headline DJs and leading local electronic artists, with the ambition of placing Sri Lanka on the global festival map. Afro Safari introduced another dimension to the nightlife calendar, combining Afro House, progressive electronic music, immersive visual production and elevated lifestyle experiences. Urban Sunset, featuring DJ Hamma, created a more relaxed experience, bringing house and lounge sounds together with panoramic views of Colombo and the Indian Ocean.

Together, these experiences reflect a deliberate approach to music programming, spanning festival-scale electronic events, international artists, and more intimate lifestyle-led experiences.

Comedy, Culture and Nightlife

The entertainment calendar has also extended beyond music. Russell Peters brought his sold-out Relax World Tour to City of Dreams Sri Lanka, placing Colombo among the international destinations included on his global itinerary. The booking represented another step in connecting Colombo to established international entertainment circuits, while the wider calendar continued to explore more intimate and culturally distinctive experiences. The Tamil Jazz Collective brought regional musical heritage into a refined live jazz setting, while Cinco de Mayo introduced a Mexican-inspired celebration of music, colour and culinary experiences. The White Party added another dimension to the nightlife calendar, combining upscale glamour with DJ-led entertainment. Together, these experiences have allowed the resort to move between large-scale international acts and more cultural and lifestyle experiences.

Where Global Reach Meets Local Culture

While international entertainment has been central to the resort’s positioning, its cultural influence has also been shaped by its connection to Sri Lankan audiences. Signature Avurudu celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year through a contemporary programme incorporating traditional elements such as the Pahan Pujava lamp-lighting ceremony. Signature Chinese New Year brought lion and fan dances to the property, while Signature Holi Rush transformed the resort into a three-day celebration of colour, music and entertainment. These recurring Signature experiences give the calendar a sense of continuity, allowing audiences to anticipate and return to celebrations that connect contemporary entertainment with longstanding cultural traditions. The resort’s continued partnership with Colombo Fashion Week further reflects this balance between international reach and local creative expression.

Why the Pattern Matters

Viewed individually, a celebrity appearance, music festival, fashion event, comedy performance, or cultural celebration can be seen simply as a single event. Viewed together, however, they reveal a shift. Over its opening year, City of Dreams Sri Lanka has developed a calendar spanning regional celebrity entertainment, international music, electronic festivals, theatre, comedy, fashion, nightlife and cultural celebrations. Each category plays a different role.

Bollywood creates regional reach and strengthens connections with one of Sri Lanka’s most important visitor markets. International artists and sold-out events connect Colombo to global entertainment circuits. Theatre and fashion demonstrate creative and production ambition. Local cultural celebrations create authenticity and ensure the resort remains connected to the communities around it. The result is a destination that is increasingly becoming known not only for the experiences it offers within its walls, but for the experiences it brings to Colombo.

The Next Chapter: Building the Future of Entertainment in Colombo

The next phase is no longer simply about establishing a new destination. It is about building on the momentum already created and strengthening Colombo’s role within the regional and global entertainment landscape. For City of Dreams Sri Lanka, that means continuing to bring internationally recognised artists and productions to the city, developing its Signature experiences, creating platforms for Sri Lankan talent and strengthening its connections with audiences across South Asia and beyond.

The opportunity extends beyond entertainment itself. As Colombo attracts more international performers, designers, producers, audiences and creative communities, the city has the potential to develop a stronger ecosystem around entertainment, tourism, hospitality and culture. City of Dreams Sri Lanka is positioned to play a central role in that evolution. The ambition is not simply to become a destination that hosts entertainment. It is to help create a city where entertainment happens, where international and local talent meet, and where audiences have a reason to travel to Colombo for the experience. The first year established the platform. The next chapter is about building what comes after it.
