What began as a small print shop in New York more than 215 years ago is today one of the world’s largest publishers and a global leader in scientific research and career-connected education. Wiley works to unlock human potential by enabling discovery, powering education, and shaping workforces. It focuses on research and academic publishing across print, electronic books, and journals, including a host of learning platforms. The company operates in more than 20 countries employing over 7,000 people.

Wiley is on a trajectory to expand and grow its global business, and its Sri Lankan technology centre is an important part of this journey. As one of the largest technology centres in the group, with similar centres spread across the world, Sri Lanka offers sought-after talent with a diverse pool of tech engineers and software developers for product development, delivery and operations. The Wiley team delivers world-class technology services to the entirety of the Wiley community, external and internal alike.

Here is a glimpse into what the Colombo colleagues do under the Wiley Technology Group, together with their counterparts at other locations:

  • They help researchers and book authors publish their work quickly
  • They contribute to products and services that enable students better understand and focus their learning experience, with adaptive learning that supports examination preparation
  • They support prospective students in finding the best courses and universities for their higher education.

The technology teams based out of Sri Lanka are responsible for developing and maintaining software products for Wiley. In addition to this, they support Wiley applications 24/7.

“Our team in Sri Lanka is accomplishing tremendous things every day that directly impac our business. It’s an exciting time to be at Wiley — and our technology centre in Sri Lanka — where colleagues play an instrumental role in driving our mission forward,” says Donna Ketler, Senior Vice President, Global Software Engineering at Wiley.

“At Wiley, we live by our values – we encourage every colleague to be a needle mover, a learning champion and to succeed as a team doing the right thing. There is a plethora of opportunities in each of those areas for colleagues who have the will and the hunger to pursue. That is how we ended up with a top-notch technology team here in Wiley Colombo,” says Bimal Gunapala, General Manager.

The internship programme at Wiley Colombo provides local university students with first-hand experiential learning in the world of technology, with diverse learning exposure on live projects and, the opportunity to join full-time.

Culturally, learning at Wiley is endless. Regular internal events focus on knowledge-sharing, creativity, innovation, and personal growth. Wiley Colombo also conducts in-house training and outreach initiatives for university students and executes programs to grow the software engineering discipline across Sri Lanka.

Finally, Wiley offers various employee resource groups, access to services that support well-being, parental leave policies, and crisis support, among its many benefits.

Since its inception in 2019, Wiley Colombo has seen exponential growth in a short span of time, now having more than 500 colleagues. With a positive outlook, the Colombo office is growing stronger and more resilient amidst the economic challenges in the country.

Wiley is one of the world’s largest publishers and a global leader in scientific research and career-connected education. Founded in 1807, Wiley enables discovery, powers education, and shapes workforces.
