How the youngest institution in Sri Lanka surpassed Rs200 billion in assets, built through two of the country’s hardest economic years, without compromising on governance or trust.

Vallibel Finance Is Proof That Integrity and Growth Can Coexist

Dhammika Perera, Founder Chairman at Vallibel Finance

Vallibel Finance did not become one of Sri Lanka’s leading financial institutions by growing faster. It became one of the youngest and fastest institutions to surpass Rs200 billion because it combined disciplined execution, integrity, prudent governance, professional excellence, digital transformation and unwavering customer trust—even through the most challenging period in Sri Lanka’s modern economic history. Driven by consistent growth and innovation, Vallibel Finance today stands proudly among the top 5 finance companies in Sri Lanka.

Jayantha Rangamuwa Managing Director at Vallibel Finance

The 2022 sovereign default triggered Sri Lanka’s worst economic challenge since independence: inflation exceeded 70%, and non-performing loans across the sector climbed into high double digits. For Vallibel, Managing Director Jayantha Rangamuwa says, those conditions became a foundation, not a setback, built on trust, prudent financial management, and a reluctance to chase growth for its own sake.

In this conversation with Echelon, Rangamuwa discusses the milestones that shaped Vallibel’s trajectory, its evolving relationship with customers, and what he hopes will define this era of the company.

Which moments transformed Vallibel Finance into one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable brands?

Every enduring institution is shaped by defining moments. At Vallibel Finance, our transformation has not been driven by a single breakthrough, but by disciplined decisions made consistently over nearly two decades.

One of our most significant milestones was becoming the youngest and fastest finance company in Sri Lanka to surpass Rs.100 billion in assets, achieving this in just seventeen years. More significantly, we doubled that achievement by exceeding Rs200 billion in assets within only 19 years, demonstrating that our momentum is not temporary but sustainable.

What gives these milestones real meaning is the manner in which they were achieved. Our journey unfolded during one of the most challenging periods in Sri Lanka’s recent history—from the Easter Sunday attacks to the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the country’s unprecedented economic challenges, sovereign default, soaring inflation and exceptionally high interest rates. While these events tested every financial institution, they also reinforced the importance of resilience, prudent decision-making and unwavering customer confidence.

Another defining chapter has been our investment in digital transformation. We recognised early that the future of financial services would be shaped not only by technology but by customer experience. Our objective was never simply to digitise processes; it was to make financial services faster, more convenient, secure and accessible, while preserving the personal relationships that remain central to our brand.

Equally important has been our nationwide expansion. Every new branch represents far more than geographical growth. It reflects our commitment to bringing trusted financial solutions closer to individuals, entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial households across Sri Lanka, ensuring that quality financial services are available wherever opportunity exists.

Looking back, I believe our greatest achievement has not been the pace of our growth, but the foundation on which it has been built. Integrity, sound governance, disciplined risk management, professionalism and customer trust have guided every stage of our journey. Those principles have enabled Vallibel Finance to evolve from a young finance company into one of Sri Lanka’s benchmark financial institutions.

Ultimately, brands are not defined by the milestones they reach, but by the confidence they inspire. That confidence remains our greatest asset and the foundation upon which every future milestone will be built.

How did recent economic challenges strengthen the Vallibel Finance brand?

Periods of prosperity seldom reveal the true character of an institution. It is during times of uncertainty that an organisation’s values, resilience and leadership are tested.

Sri Lanka’s recent economic challenges created one of the most demanding operating environments the financial sector has ever experienced. Inflation reached unprecedented levels, interest rates rose sharply, customer confidence weakened, and asset quality across the industry came under considerable pressure. Every financial institution faced difficult decisions. For Vallibel Finance, these circumstances did not alter our direction; they reinforced it.

Rather than pursuing short-term opportunities or compromising our standards, we remained committed to prudent financial management, disciplined risk practices and responsible decision-making. Our priority was to safeguard the confidence placed in us by all our stakeholders while continuing to support the communities we serve.

These experiences strengthened our organisation. They enhanced our resilience, sharpened our risk management capabilities, and reinforced a culture of accountability and professionalism across the business. More importantly, they strengthened the trust our customers place in Vallibel Finance. In uncertain times, customers naturally gravitate towards institutions that demonstrate stability, consistency and integrity—not merely through words, but through their actions.

The experience also reaffirmed an important belief that has guided us from the beginning: sustainable growth is always more valuable than rapid growth achieved at the expense of long-term stability. Financial institutions have a responsibility to preserve confidence in the financial system itself.

Today, as the economy gradually recovers, we emerge not simply as a larger organisation but as a stronger one. The challenges of recent years have reinforced the values that define Vallibel Finance and further strengthened our commitment to being, in every sense, The Symbol of Stability.

What does Vallibel Finance stand for today that competitors struggle to replicate?

What differentiates us is trust. Competitors can copy products, pricing, technology and branch networks. Those change over time. What they cannot copy is nearly two decades of consistently earning trust through integrity, prudent financial management, professional people and disciplined execution. From the day we started, our focus has never been on scaling; it has been on building lasting relationships with customers.

People place their savings, investments and financial aspirations with us because they have confidence in Vallibel’s stability and the way it conducts business.

We’ve built that confidence by staying consistent, financially disciplined and customer-focused over the years. Our tagline, “The Symbol of Stability,” is not just a marketing message; it reflects who we are and how we operate every day.

This reputation takes years to build and can’t be replicated overnight.

In an increasingly accessible technology market, what will continue to differentiate the Vallibel Finance brand?

Technology has levelled the playing field. Almost every financial institution now offers mobile apps, online services and digital payments, and that accessibility will only deepen from here.

But technology alone is not a differentiator. Culture is. What sets an organisation apart going forward is how well it combines technology with human judgement, customer trust, financial strength, governance and service excellence. Components a system cannot replicate on its own.

For us, digital transformation is not just about adding features. It is about making banking simpler, faster and more secure, without losing the personal service our customers expect. Our combination of financial strength, customer trust and continuous innovation will continue to set Vallibel Finance apart in a digital marketplace.

“From the day we started, our focus has never been on scaling; it has been on building lasting relationships with customers.”

As Vallibel Finance expands, how do you ensure every branch and digital interaction reinforces the same brand promise?

Consistency matters. Every one of nearly 100 branches should feel like the same institution. Whether a customer visits us in Colombo, Jaffna or Hambantota, or reaches us through the mobile app, they should meet the same professionalism, the same ethics, the same respect and the same speed.

That consistency comes from our people, our processes and our culture. We invest in employee training, service standards and technology so that every customer interaction reflects the values of Vallibel Finance.

Expansion is not just about adding branches. It is about extending the same trusted experience to more communities across Sri Lanka.

What do you hope future generations will identify as the defining chapter of Vallibel Finance’s evolution?

If future generations remember this period, I hope they remember it as the time Vallibel Finance proved that extraordinary growth and uncompromising integrity can coexist, and that it is possible to build one of Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing financial institutions without sacrificing governance, professionalism, customer trust or financial stability.

Growth matters, but growth built on integrity, innovation and customer trust matters more. Numbers may define milestones, but institutions are ultimately remembered for the confidence they inspire and the values they uphold.

Every decision we make today aims not only to deliver results for the present but to build an institution that will keep earning the trust of Sri Lankans for years to come.
